Forest Health Surveys

In cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, FTF has been touring the Roaring Fork Valley to identify areas for forest health surveys. Forest health surveys are the first step to creating a forest stewardship plan. Stewardship plans are the basis for healthy, sustainable forest management. FTF and its partners work together to gather the necessary data in order to create relevant stewardship plans.

An important component of developing an appropriately specified plan for a forest health survey is to conduct preliminary ground reconnaissance to establish boundaries, determine general conditions and fix points on the ground using GPS instruments. Comprehensive forest health assessments require that accurate, contemporaneous stand survey data be available to guide development of a proactive stewardship plan.

Four Corners

4corners

The above photograph shows an area called Four Corners, which rises up to the West of the Hunter Creek Valley. This area was brought to the attention of For The Forest by the USFS because it contains number of forest health issues. If you look closely at the photograph, you can see Aspen decline, Douglass Fir Beetle, Mountain Pine Beetle, and Spruce die-back. The 1,000-acre stand survey will assess the state of this forest to help determine the necessary steps in order to:

* Increase wildlife habitat
* Decrease wildfire danger
* Increase species and age class diversity among the trees, which are essential to a   healthy forest

This stand survey began on July 20, 2010 and the results will be posted here once the report is written.
