Hope Mine
Biochar and Hope Mine Reclamation Project: Project Goals - * Use Mountain Pine Beetle killed trees from Smuggler Mountain and other areas to create biochar. These trees, if left in the forest, will decompose and emit CO2, but if turned into biochar that CO2 can be sequestered. * Use the biochar to conduct an experiment at the Hope Mine site to reclaim toxins, heavy metals, and restore the natural ecosystem. * Protect our watershed. ![]() Potential Outcomes - * Carbon sequestration. * Reclamation of mine tailings. * Restore the health of the stream and riparian habitats that are currently adversely affected by mine tailings in the water. What is Biochar? click here for a great short video on biochar>> "If you could continually turn a lot of organic material into biochar, you could, over time, reverse the history of the last two hundred years... We can, literally, start sucking some of the carbon that our predecessors have poured into the atmosphere down through our weeds and stalks and stick it back in the ground. We can run the movie backward. We can un-mine some of the coal, undrill some of the oil. We can take at least pieces of the Earth and - this is something we haven't done for quite a while - leave them Better Than We Found Them." ~Bill McKibben, professor, author, climate activist and founder of 350.org |
