For The ForestProgramsThe challenges facing our forests are substantial, widespread and systemic. They include ecological disturbance, loss of wildlife habitat, unusual insect epidemics, arboreal diseases, dramatic increases in the frequency and intensity of wildfires, and threats to watersheds, creeks and rivers. While the roots of these problems are many, they include warmer temperatures, ever increasing human development and years of well-intentioned but ecologically questionable wildfire suppression. For The Forest believes that a robust public/private partnership is needed to devise a community-based approach to sustainable forest stewardship in the wildland-urban interface ("WUI"). Examples of community forest stewardship techniques might include removing diseased or dying trees to reduce wildfire risk and planting new tree species to increase diversity. For The Forest is focused both on the imminent threat posed by the mountain pine beetle, in addition to the variety of other forest health issues like sudden aspen decline (SAD), and fir decline. While our efforts are currently focused locally in the Roaring Fork Valley, we expect in the future to expand our work to address broader national issues of forest health. For the Forest has partnered with many local non-profit organizations and the US Forest Service to create a variety of programs all aimed at increasing civic engagement on issues of conservation, ecological restoration, biodiversity and carbon emission reduction.
